BRADFORD - The short-eared owl hunts by day and by night.  Also known as the swamp owl or evening owl, this raptor nests on the ground and keeps the rodent population in check.

One in particular, rescued from the Sachuest Refuge in Middletown after a tussle with prey in a briar patch, has been rehabilitated and set free to once more hover low over long-abandoned crop fields, marshes and meadows, ready to pounce on unsuspecting voles and mice.

The recovered raptor was released Friday after his weeks-long rehabilitation in the experienced hands of Vivian Maxson, founder of the Born To Be Wild Nature Center in Bradford.
